Are Varicose Veins Dangerous?

It’s a very simple question, but one that everyone thinks of when they receive a medical diagnosis: “Is it dangerous?” Luckily, in the vast majority of cases, varicose veins are not dangerous. However, in rare cases, complications can occur.

Some of the complications include the following:

  • Blood clots

  • Minor bleeding

  • Ulcers on the skin near the varicose veins

Those with varicose veins are also at increased risk of the following:

  • Deep vein thrombosis (DVT): a blood clot in a deep vein within the leg

  • Pulmonary embolism: a blood clot that breaks off and travels to the lungs, which can be life threatening. You may notice shortness of breath, chest pain, dizziness, anxiety, rapid pulse, sweating, or coughing up blood.

If you notice any of these symptoms related to your varicose veins, seek medical attention:

  • Darker patches of skin, sores, or ulcers

  • Bleeding veins

  • Veins that are painful and feel hot

  • Persistent pain and swelling
