Ultrasound for Fibroid Diagnosis
Many women are diagnosed with these very common, non-cancerous tumors on their uterus during a visit with their OB/GYN, commonly through a pelvic exam. The doctor will examine your uterus to feel the size and shape of it. Any irregularities could be a sign of fibroids.
An ultrasound is the next best step if you’re experiencing symptoms, which we can do at MIMIT Health.
Fibroids can be very painful for women, which is why it’s very important to schedule an appointment if you’re feeling abdominal pain. Now, let’s discuss the ultrasound test in more detail.
If you’ve ever been pregnant, you’ve experienced an ultrasound test firsthand. But even if you haven’t been pregnant, you’re probably familiar with how it’s performed:
It uses high-frequency sound waves which reflect off your body structure to make an image. By seeing what’s going on in your uterus, our interventional radiologists can then make a firm diagnosis. It’s especially beneficial because it doesn’t give off radiation like a CT scan and it’s a very easy process for the patient.
You simply lie down while the interventional radiologist adds a gel to your skin, which assists in getting accurate results. Then, a handheld device is moved across the abdomen to see the uterus in depth.
